9 September saw the ceremonial opening of the Summer Spartakiada Games of Gazprom at the Adler Arena Stadium. The games take place from 8 to 15 September in Sochi, Russia’s capital for the Olympics. Almost 3 thousand athletes from 29 Gazprom subsidiaries participate in the competition. It is the first time that the Gazprom International Team joins such an outstanding event. More than 40 employees of the company compete in five different sports, such as football, volleyball, swimming, running, and chess.
In his welcoming speech to Spartakiada participants, Andrey Fick, Managing Director and CEO of Gazprom International, thanked his colleagues for their active involvement and wished them to be in good shape, compete fairly, and achieve excellent results.
“This is the first time we join a sports event as part of Gazprom Group. I hope this will become a good tradition, strengthen our team spirit, and help promote a healthy lifestyle among the employees of Gazprom International”.
Chess and volleyball tournaments among women and men were held the same day, together with track and field, swimming, and football competitions.
During the Spartakiada games from 9 to 14 September, athletes from Gazprom subsidiaries will compete in six different sports, such as volleyball, kettlebell lifting, track and field, swimming, chess, and football. Children’s teams will strive for victory in four: track and field, chess, swimming, and football. 180 medal events, of which 23 are team and 157 individual competitions, will run throughout the week at Sochi’s sports venues.
It is the first time that the Spartakiada Games include tasks of qualifying for GTO (Ready for Labor and Defense Program) standards. The following four sports venues will host the competitions: Adler Arena, Yunost Sports Complex, Ice Cube Curling Center, and Gazprom's Mountain Tourist Center.

Employees of Gazprom subsidiaries, as well as children attending sports clubs of Gazprom subsidiaries, can participate in the Spartakiada games.
The Spartakiada games focus on promoting a healthy lifestyle, physical training, and strong moral stand among the employees of Gazprom subsidiaries and their children. In addition, they provide space for sharing experiences in physical culture and mass sports as well as conserve traditions and relationships in the area of sports.
